Suncorp may refer you to their own hire company — you don't have to accept.

Under Australian common law, you are entitled to choose your own replacement vehicle provider. Suncorp's preferred hire company is contracted to keep their costs low — not to maximise your entitlement. You have the right to engage an independent provider like 888 Car Hire, and to have the reasonable hire costs recovered from the at-fault driver's insurer.

Common questions — Suncorp not-at-fault claims

Can't find what you need? Call us on 0423 022 881.

The other driver is insured by Suncorp. Am I eligible for a replacement car?

If another driver caused your accident and they are insured by Suncorp, you may be eligible for a replacement vehicle with $0 upfront hire cost. 888 Car Hire will contact Suncorp on your behalf to recover the reasonable hire costs from the claim. You don't need to handle this yourself.

Suncorp said I have to use their recommended hire car company. Is that true?

No. Under Australian common law, you have the right to choose your own replacement vehicle provider. Suncorp may recommend or refer you to a preferred hire company — but that company's primary obligation is to Suncorp, not to you. You are free to use 888 Car Hire instead, and we will deal with Suncorp directly on your behalf.

Does Suncorp have to pay for my replacement car?

Where your claim is eligible, the at-fault party's insurer — Suncorp — is responsible for the reasonable hire costs. 888 Car Hire seeks recovery of those costs directly from Suncorp after the replacement vehicle is provided to you. You do not pay the hire cost upfront.

Do I need a claim number to get started?

No. You don't need a claim number to contact us. Many of our customers get in touch before a claim has even been lodged with Suncorp. We can work with what you have and collect additional details as the claim progresses.

What information do I need about the other driver?

As much as you have available. Ideally: the other driver's name, vehicle registration, and confirmation that they are insured by Suncorp. A policy number is helpful but not required to get started. The more information you have, the faster we can act.

What if the other driver says they'll pay without going through their insurer?

We recommend against accepting an informal cash settlement without first understanding your full entitlement. You may be entitled to more than the other driver offers — including a replacement vehicle for the full duration of repairs, not just the immediate period after the accident. Call us before agreeing to anything.

How quickly can I get a replacement vehicle?

In most cases across Melbourne metro, we aim to arrange delivery the same day you contact us. We're based in Maidstone and cover suburbs across the Melbourne metro area.
